March 3 from Trivandrum
I am in Trivandrum, a southern city in India.M Y party and I have been speaking at the Logos Theological College to the students there. They sit on wooden benches with no back and listen to the speakers speak for an hour. Mostly young people between ages 18-22.
Tomorrow is their first graduating service. Should be wonderful. Life in Trivandrum is different than Hyderabad. It is a cleaner city and probably more educated people live here. I have an appointment in 9 minutes--more later.
Wednesday, March 1
I am in India
We spent half of the day in Joy Children's home. I showed the kids my iPod and fam pic. They thought it was pretty cool. I thaught the kids how to "high five," and they all wanted to "high five" me when I left. Got some great pix.
I sat in on the board meeting with Jim Geurink. It went well and from my perspecitve, I hought Mr Geurink was encouraged by it.
We had homemade curry everything for dinner tonight. It was delicious, I thougth. Our hostess, Subashini, said this is spicy, but I found it rather good.
We travel tomorrow to Trivandrum and I speak there tomorrow night.
Sorry this is poorly written, I'm about half asleep and suffering from jet lag.
No, I didn't drink the water. . . .

Jim Book - Deacon for 37 years
Jim Book resigned on January 1, 2006 from the deacon board at Central Baptist Church in Hobart after 37 years as a deacon. He served as a deacon through four pastors--Pastor Don Jennings, Pastor Dale Fisher, Dr. Clayton Nuttall, and presently Pastor David R. Webb. Jim taught the high school boys Sunday School class for many years. He also worked on Sunday afternoons at the local jail ministry. He played on the church basketball team, and was the ace of the Central softball pitching staff in the mid seventies. He once even pitched a no-hitter! Jim was active in WW II as a flight instructor, teaching pilots how to fly B-25s. His best work, however, was serving Christ's church as a deacon. Always serving his care group, always loyal, always praying for his pastors: these symbolize Jim Book's years at Central as deacon. Sunday January 29th, 2006 Central honored Jim and Doris, his wife of 55 years, with a certificate and a dinner with them as the guests of honor. Greetings can be sent to DJgolfbook@msn.com Pictured is Deacon Chairman Lou Dubach presenting the award to Jim and Doris Book.Monday, February 13

Idol Worship Is Alive and Well in 21st Century America
What “god” or “Gods” do you turn to in your everyday life?
A god can be someone or something that is perceived to provide satisfaction, meet your needs, satisfy your desires and longings, bring joy, assurance, comfort, peace, release, meaning, value, or escape from hardships of life. Some gods remove guilt, or help you get through the day.
The Bible speaks of false gods of wood and stone, but also of the other kind:
- “Guilty men, whose own strength is their god” Hab. 1:11
- I have put my trust in gold or said to pure gold, ‘You are my security,’ Job 31:24
- “No one can serve two masters. Either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other.
- You cannot serve both God and Money. Matthew 6:24
- “Their god is their stomach, Phil 3:19
What are some 21st Century gods? Some find security and release in liquor. Their tranquility and peace is at the bottom of an empty glass. Others find their release, their delight in Ben and Jerry’s Death by Chocolate Ice Cream or a bag of Peerless Potato Chips. The god of youth or thin is very popular today. People think they would be happy and satisfied if they look younger, or if they could be thinner. I know some people who find joy and satisfaction in having everything in its place; they worship the God of “perfection,” the god of order. Some people worship their fantasies. Many people worship the god of pleasure. Some workaholics worship the god of work: this god can bring a sense of achievement; he is perceived to satisfy a deep craving of accomplishment. Sometimes young people worship the god of popularity or approval. They can do foolish things to gain the approval of others. People think that these things will ultimately satisfy.
It is not as though some of the things mentioned above can’t provide some degree of pleasure and satisfaction. Doubtless they do, or they would not be desired. And it isn’t as though all of these things are wrong, they certainly aren’t. They become wrong when they are desired more than the God of the Bible who is the only person who can thoroughly satisfy and bring pleasure. Ultimately if other things are looked to for final satisfaction, they will, at the end of the day, let you down. Only God never fails and always brings satisfaction.
Many will likely protest: I don’t worship any gods but the God of the Bible. Don’t be too certain that this isn’t a problem. There are some questions you can ask to determine if you worship a false god. Remember that worship means “to appreciate, to delight in, to reflect upon the worth of something.” With that in mind, answer the following questions:
- What you think about in your discretionary time?
- What you think about in your free time?
- What you think about as you drift off to sleep?
- What you think about as you drive down the road?
- What you think about when you wake in the morning?
- Where do you spend your discretionary money?
- What mental reflection brings you the greatest enjoyment?
- What acquisition brings you the most delight?
- How would you fill in the blank: I would be supremely happy if only __________?
To look at this another way, how can you know if you worship something more than God?
Ask yourself these questions:
- What happens when something you delight in is removed?
- How do you respond when you don’t get what you want?
- When life is unfair are you sad, angry, hateful, bitter, fearful, resentful, discouraged, bitter, blue, spiteful, or depressed?
- What thoughts go through your mind? "This isn't fair," or "Why me?" or "What's the use?" or "Oh no, not again," or "Not now," or "If God loved me …," or “I just hate it when…,” or “I’ll show him/her.”
- What do you do when your “god” doesn’t satisfy? Do you clam up, pout, blow up, storm out of the house, or plan to get even, hit someone, or break something?
- Do you fail to do something you should have done?
- Do you grumble the rest of the day?
- Do you fail to fulfill your responsibilities or obligations?
If your life is characterized by the wrong kind of responses when your gods have let you down, then they are items you value more than the pleasure and approval of the LORD! You have worshipped the gifts more than the giver, the creation more than the creator, the blessings more than the bless-er.
God is good to remove our delights to show remind us that we must love the giver more than the gift. Our creator, who gives us all good gifts for our enjoyment (1 Tim 6:17), can take those good gifts away to cause us to recall that enjoying the creation more than the creator is a step toward decadent living (Romans 1:25).
Do you turn to your “god” or “gods” for satisfaction when life gives you lemons? Remember that David said: “The sorrows of those will increase who run after other gods,” Psalm 16:4. Ultimately these things will not bring lasting satisfaction or pleasure. Jeremiah proclaimed: “My people have committed two sins: They have forsaken me, the spring of living water, and have dug their own cisterns, broken cisterns that cannot hold water. Note David’s delights in the following verses. See what he found pleasure in during the good times as well as the very difficult:
- Psalm 1:2: …His delight is in the law of the LORD, and on his law he meditates day and night.
- Psalm 16:2,3: 2 I said to the LORD, “You are my Lord; apart from you I have no good thing.” 3 As for the saints who are in the land, they are the glorious ones in whom is all my delight.
- Psalm 27:4: 4 One thing I ask of the LORD, this is what I seek: that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, to gaze upon the beauty of the LORD and to seek him in his temple.
- Psalm 37:4: 4 Delight yourself in the LORD…
- Psalm 63:1-7: 1 O God, you are my God, earnestly I seek you; my soul thirsts for you, my body longs for you, in a dry and weary land where there is no water. 2 I have seen you in the sanctuary and beheld your power and your glory. 3 Because your love is better than life, my lips will glorify you. 4 I will praise you as long as I live, and in your name I will lift up my hands. 5 My soul will be satisfied as with the richest of foods; with singing lips my mouth will praise you. 6 On my bed I remember you; I think of you through the watches of the night.
There is more to come in later posts, but for now consider the false gods you may turn to that bring some satisfaction but will ultimately let you down. Examine your life. What brings you deep satisfaction and effervescent joy?
